While most observers expected the pro-Soviet regime to immediately collapse after the withdrawal, infighting among the mujahadeen groups allowed the regime to remain in place until 1992, when rebel forces captured Kabul. However, civil war and political fragmentation continued until 1996 when a relatively new group, the Taliban, was able to fill the political vacuum and ultimately gain control of approximately 90 percent of the country. The ethnic and religious differences of the mujahadeen which caused the lengthy post-Soviet civil war reflected the tensions and political infighting of both Afghan history and the more contemporary problems that emerged during the Soviet occupation.
