Speech and writing are forms of communication that use the medium of language but they do this quite differently. Writing is not just speech written down. The two operate quite differently. Speech is a time-based medium whereby people exchange information or sequence their descriptions of events or actions over time. Thus, speech can be explained as being temporal, instantaneous and sequential. Writing, on the other hand, is primarily a spatial medium and does not have the same constraints of time.
