Access to play spaces Example of research: Gaining access to quality play spaces is a second barrier impacting opportunities for play in America. Grow et al. (2008), in research conducted for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington, studied three major cities in the US. They examined factors related to two sources of physical activity for youth: active use of recreation sites and active transport to recreation sites. Eighty-seven parents of children and one hundred twenty-four matched pairs of parents and adolescents in three US cities reported on youths’ active use of, proximity to, and walking/biking to twelve recreation sites and on neighborhood walkability and safety.
